St Nic's: Living on the edge with Jesus

Youth Work at St Nic’s

We have two youth groups at St Nic’s. The first is called Rooted and is for those in years 7–9 at secondary school. The second group is called Deeper and is for those who are in year 10 plus. We are also starting an additional group for our sixth formers. This will be meeting once a fortnight mid-week and they will also have their own separate weekend in December 2007.

The aim of this section is to give you a flavour of who we are and what we do.

We are dedicated to three goals:

Discipleship
living personal relationships with Christ.
Developing
discovering and developing in each young person their God-given gifts and abilities.
Declaring
our faith through word and deeds.

Sundays

We join with the whole church in part of the 10.30 am Sunday services, and spend the rest of the time in groups. The older group meets in the church offices and the younger group meets in a conference room at Browne Jacobson Solicitors. Rather than preaching, most of our learning is through sharing with one another in cell groups.

Passionate

Passionate is our new youth service. It happens once every two weeks on Friday night and is held at St Nic’s church. It starts at 7.30 pm and finishes at 9.30 pm. The format is simply fantastic worship and teaching. The aim of the event is to help us all to become more passionate about God and the things that are on his heart. The dates and themes are:

Week Away 2008

Friday 14–Wednesday 19 March

This year we are returning to Stathern Lodge in Leceistershire. It is only a twenty minute drive from Nottingham.

We have an awesome week planned for you. The centre is a little more basic than our usual venues butit is in an awesome location, with a massive sports hall attached. We are going to have an inflatable day, craft and sport activities, wide games, and entertainment each night.

Also this year we have two excellent speakers booked for our meetings. We are going to be looking at the book of Romans in the mornings and Daniel in the evenings.

The cost is only £70 but you need to make your own way to and from the centre.

To book your place please complete the booking form and hand it in with a cheque payable to St Nicholas PCC.

Sixth Formers Weekend 2007

Friday 30 November–Sunday 2 December

This will be the second ever sixth former weekend. The aim of the weekend is to give you all a really chilled weekend away at the beautiful Peak Centre. You will have plenty of time to relax in front of the log fire. To check out what the centre is like have a look at their web site.

While there we are going to explore the theme of biblical leadership and also spend time together in worship.

We will be travelling to and from Nottingham by minibus and cars. The cost includes all transport, accommodation and most of your meals. You will have to bring a little extra with you for lunch on Saturday as we are going to a restaurant/pub.

You are welcome to bring friends along. Altogether there will be 26 places so it will be first come first served.

To book your place please complete the booking form and hand it in with a cheque for £45 payable to St Nicholas PCC.

Socials

Both groups meet socially on a Friday night. We meet in our homes, go bowling, quasar, ice skating and rafting, to name a few. Friends are more than welcome to any of these events. For details of what is happening this term please see both groups programmes.

Dance (Ascendance)

When you think of church and dance you may think of flags, ribbons and banners. What we do – Street Dance – is nothing like that! Despite its name, Street Dance does not usually involve dancing in the streets. Rather it is a style of dance that has originated from the streets and is used by groups you might see on MTV or The Box. We meet on a Tuesday night.

Youth Worship Band

2000 saw the start of our youth band at St Nic’s, headed up by excellent James and Izzy Pitcher. The group has led worship at a number of services at St Nic’s and have also lead the worship at our youth events and at Easter People. The band has gone from strength to strength so much so that we have started two more. In each band we are blessed not just to have talented young people but to have talented students too. Each band meets fortnightly on a Tuesday or Thursday evening.

Mission Trips

At St Nic’s we believe that you learn more by doing than just hearing. That is why we aim to give our young people chances to put their faith into practise. We have been to Germany on three occasions and Namibia twice. We believe though that God is calling us now to do mission in Nottingham.

The Noise also gives us great opportunities to demonstrate God’s amazing love and grace to those in the inner city.

Another brilliant opportunity is when we lead the 11s to 13s work at Easter People – an annual non-denominational event, similar to Spring Harvest.

The Future

We are so excited at what God is doing among the young people at St Nic’s and we believe he is preparing us for so much more. We don’t know what is in store but we want to see the friends of our young people coming to Christ and into a full relationship with Him. We are thinking through events that are appropriate to the unchurched – running an Alpha group and starting up a drama group so that more of our young people can use their gifts. But at the core we know we need to become a community of young people where God is at the centre and we are a people who care and support one another.

As you can see we have loads of weekly events going on. Please check out the rest of the youth pages as they give you a bigger flavour of who we are and what we get up to. If you want to know any more information please get in touch with me at chris@stnics.org or call me at the church office 0115 952 4600.
