Moving to our temporary home…

These are exciting times! From the first Sunday in April, we will leave the church in the hands of the builders who will transform the interior, ready for our move back into the building in the autumn. In the mean time we will meet in the main hall of the Congregational Federation building, 4 Castle Gate, near to Marks & Spencer.

Here is some information about our temporary home:

  • Parking: For the 10.30am service, the Nelsons car park will be conveniently closer. To use the car park you will need to leave Maid Marian Way at Friar Lane, proceed to Castle Gate where you turn left, follow the road into Stanford Street. The car park is at the very end of Stanford Street on the right. Using the car park cost £1 which can be paid on the day or by purchasing a book of tickets. PLEASE NOTE: Parking along Castle Gate is not permitted. ( ‘Blue-badge’ holders are advised to check the restrictions in this area.)
  • Seating: Can we encourage you to use the chairs in the centre of the floor area? This will help us feel more of a community together. The pews around the edge can be left for latecomers and extra people.
Provision for children & Youth: All of the children’s groups will meet on the ground floor. Access is via the doors to the left as you enter the building. The youth group will continue to meet at the church centre on Maid Marian Way.
  • Access: There is a stair-lift available for anyone who might find the stairs difficult. Stewards will be on hand to assist you.
  • WCs: There are more toilets in this building than at St Nic’s! These are located on the ground floor to the left as you enter the building. There are separate toilets for the children.
  • Evacuation: In the event of emergency, you should leave the building by the marked exits at each corner of the main hall. Our gathering point will be near the postboxes by Marks & Spencer, opposite Paperchase.
  • Induction loop: an induction loop will be available but only in one area of the main hall. The area will be marked out with tape, but if you are unsure, please ask one of the stewards.

During the time we are out of St Nic’s please do not attempt to visit the church. The church will be a building site and only people authorised by the contractors will be allowed to visit. However, the contractors are keen that we are kept informed and so, sometime during the building programme, there will be an organised visit so that we can all see the progress.

It would be great if, while we are in our temporary home we make every effort to look out for each other.  If you don’t see someone at your usual service, why not drop them an email or give them a ring to make sure they’re OK and they know where we’re meeting?

In October we will celebrate the completion of this project with two concerts by the King’s Chamber Orchestra on 12 October. Bishop Paul will officially open the building on Sunday, 6 November.
Just five months (give or take!) and we will be back in a re-ordered church, re-energised and with fresh vision of what God wants to do through and in St Nic’s! We are not just moving out but moving on!
