A GROWING CHURCH
St Nic’s September and October, 2010

Growing daily
Acts 2.42 – 47

  1. Should we expect to grow as a church? How? Why?
  2. What factors enabled the early church to grow?
  3. This passage may describe an ‘ideal’ but could we emulate it?

Growth in Jerusalem
Acts 6.1-7

  1. What is the most challenging/scary situation you face as a Christian?
  2. How can church structures help / hinder mission and growth?
  3. Did Stephen fulfil his job description?

Growth in Judea & Samaria
Acts 9.19b – 31

  1. Share your faith stories. How many of the group are not from Christian homes?
  2. What can we learn from the roles of Ananias and Barnabas in this chapter?
  3. Who are the least likely candidates for conversion you know? Pray for them.

Growth in Syria
Acts 12

  1. Where in the world is the church growing fastest?
  2. What is the effect of persecution on the church in this passage?
  3. If, as many believe, it is becoming more challenging to be a Christian in the UK, how can we do more than survive?

Growth in Asia Minor
Acts 16.1 – 5

  1. Who has been a significant ‘spiritual mother/father’ for you?
  2. Paul had mixed success as a mentor (see 15.36ff) but his relationship with Timothy was very important. What would it mean for you mentor a younger Christian? Naomi can help you think this one through.
  3. What is the connection between verse 4 and verse 5?

Growth in Europe
Acts 19.1 – 20

  1. As the gospel spreads further beyond the Jewish world, discipling those with no Jewish background becomes more challenging. What does this passage tell us about what it means to be a Christian? (see ch 2, 8, 10)
  2. What was Paul’s mission strategy in Ephesus. Can it inform ours?
  3. What spiritual influences do we need to publicly confront? (vv17-20)

Growth in Rome
Acts 28.17 – 31

  1. What holds us back from sharing our faith.
  2. Compare your situation to Paul’s. Who has the easiest circumstances for sharing Christ? How can constrictions become opportunities?
  3. Can you identify (and write down) the names of three people you see every week and would like to come to faith? Commit to pray for them.

GET READY!

A look at the preparation for the Exodus: Advent theme and preparation for 2011.

The God who sees
Exodus 3.1 – 22
1 Cor.4.1-5

  1. The Exodus is based on the character (= name) of God. What does this passage tell us about his character?
  2. What does it mean to live in the presence of a God who sees (v.7)?
  3. How do you feel about our ‘exodus’ to the Congregational Centre?

"the glory of God is man fully alive; moreover man's life is the vision of God: if God's revelation through creation has already obtained life for all the beings that dwell on earth, how much more will the Word's manifestation of the Father obtain life for those who see God." St Irenaeus

What is in your hand?
Exodus 4.1 – 17
1 Thess. 2.13-20

  1. Look at Moses’ excuses for obeying God. Do you identify with any?
  2. In his hand Moses had the tools of his trade. What is ‘in your hand’?
  3. What is in our hand (indeed our hand itself) is capable of great good and great harm. Are there things ‘in your hand’ that could be put to better use?

CHURCH LIFE DAY (21 November) led by Footprints, Roy McCloughry and Liz Babbs

No change is the easiest option
Exodus 5.1 – 6.1
Luke 1.39-55

  1. Look at the role work plays in the lives of God’s people. Work is good (whether it is paid or not) but can take a disproportionate role. Discuss.
  2. Can you sympathise with the foremen (v15f)? What makes it so difficult for us to extricate ourselves from our ‘duties’ in order to obey God?
  3. If we are to fulfil God’s calling on us, what do we need to stop doing?

Signs, hard hearts & the enduring word of God
Exodus 6.28 – 7.24
Hebrews 3.7-15

  1. Moses found it easier to obey God with the support of his brother. Is our Christian walk harder because we go solo? How could that change?
  2. What is hardness of heart? Who is responsible for it? (see also Heb.3)
  3. How helpful are signs and wonders?

The God who keeps vigil
Exodus 12.31 – 51
1 Thess.5.1-11

  1. The Passover feast became central to the life of Israel, even when they settled in the Promised Land (13 v.14ff). Why? What does it say about the identity of the people of God and their relationship with him?
  2. Verses 40 – 42 talk about the significance of this event in the context of the broader history of God’s people. As we are very near to making our ‘exodus’, spend a good time in prayer for our readiness.

Worship on the journey
Exodus 41.1 – 36
John 4.21 – 26

  1. The purpose of the Exodus was worship (8.1). How might our exodus be significant in terms of worship?
  2. What does it mean to ‘worship in spirit and in truth’ (John 4.23)?
  3. The single act of ‘worship in the desert’ which was a pretext for the Exodus was to lead to a life of worship in the Promised Land. Pray that our ‘exodus’ will be more than a relocation of worship services.
