The Alpha Course
In common with many other churches, we use the Alpha Course to teach about the Christian faith. This eight-week course runs two or three times a year and is a great way to introduce you and your friends to what it means to have a personal relationship with Christ.
What is Alpha?
Alpha is an eight–ten week course to introduce the basics of what it means to be a Christian. It is designed for those with questions about Christianity, those who have recently become Christians, or for people who are already Christians and wish to attend as a refresher course in the basics of the Christian faith.
The weekly sessions begin with an evening meal, followed by teaching and then discussion groups. They are aimed at helping people to understand more about the Christian faith and enabling participants to explore further the subjects being taught and to express their hopes or concerns as the course unfolds.

- Who is Jesus?
- Why did Jesus die?
- How can I be sure of my faith?
- How and why should I read the Bible?
- Why and how do I pray?
- How can I resist evil?
- How does God guide us?
- Why and how should we tell others?
- Does God heal today?
- What about the Church?
Costs
The costs of running the programme and providing the evening meal are met by St Nicholas’ Church. If you would like to make a donation, you are free to do so.
Weekend Away
A residential weekend of teaching on the person and work of the Holy Spirit is held at a residential conference centre towards the end of the course. This weekend is an important part of the course and it is hoped that all participants will be able to attend. The cost of the weekend is approximately £65.00. If that causes a problem, you can talk about this with a group leader.
Discussion Groups
The discussion groups, which take place each evening after the teaching, have two group leaders, two helpers, and eight course participants per group. Course participants are assigned to a group on the first evening and remain with that group for the duration of the course.
Alpha Dinner
After completion of the course, there is an Alpha Dinner, when the course participants can invite friends along to hear about the Christian faith, receive details of the next Alpha course and enjoy a meal together.
