Gift Aid – Questions and Answers

Why should I fill in a Gift Aid Declaration?
A Gift Aid Declaration will enable us to claim back from the Inland Revenue approximately £28 for every £100 given.
What if I pay tax at the higher rate?
If you pay tax at the higher rate of 40%, you will be able to increase your giving by about an extra 30%, without it costing you any more than your original gift! Further details may be obtained from the church office.
Do I have to be in ‘paid’ work?
No - tax is often deducted from pensions and other income. Any tax you pay counts towards the tax refund to the church.
What if I’d like to increase my giving?
Just fill in a new Standing Order form, or increase your cash or cheque donations as appropriate; the Gift Aid Declaration will automatically cover you for the new amount.
What if I cease to be a tax-payer?
Let us know immediately so that we can cease claiming tax back from the Inland Revenue at the right point in the tax year. (We may be able to claim tax back on gifts after your change in circumstances, due to the amount of tax you have already paid that year.)
What if I wish to give an additional gift?
St Nic’s can reclaim tax on any single additional gift for any amount. By completing a Gift Aid Declaration you enable us to reclaim the tax you have paid on any amount you give at any time.
Can I give by cash or cheque and have tax reclaimed on my gift?
Yes, please contact the church office about our envelope scheme for giving by cash. Please ensure any cheques or building society orders are clearly marked with your name and please add the words ‘Gift Aid’ on the back.
What if my financial circumstances change and I have to reduce or stop my giving?
You are free to stop your giving; but we would ask you to let us and your bank know.
