Giving
Being involved in the finances of the church is an integral part of being a
member and we encourage everyone to take their giving seriously and
sacrificially as taught in Scripture. All of the church’s income comes
from donations made by its members, most of whom give by monthly bank standing
order. Of course, if you are a visitor to St Nic’s, we don’t
expect you to give to the church — you are our guest.
The government encourages giving to churches and we try to make the most of this by encouraging everyone who pays tax to use Gift Aid donations, which is very simple to do. For every £1 given by Gift Aid, the government adds 28p. A separate leaflet available in church gives more information about this.
Where does it all go?
As a church we apply Biblical principles to our own finances by giving away a proportion of our income, regularly supporting various missionaries and organisations.
So, for every £1.00 we spend:
- 27p will go to the Diocese — for clergy salaries, clergy training and some to support other churches (the Common Fund).
- 32p will go towards the costs of paying the staff, including national insurance, pensions and training.
- 22p will be sent to the missionaries or organisations we support — a small proportion of this will be used for social projects.
- 6p will be used to maintain the buildings, pay rates and for heating, lighting, insurance etc.
- 4p will cover the administration costs of running St Nic’s — printing and publicity, telephones, etc.
- 9p will cover the costs involved of ministry within St Nic’s — house groups, childrens work, care and support, worship costs.
We believe it is right for Christians to give a proportion (usually one tenth) of their income to support Christian work. We encourage all members to take this seriously as part of their commitment both to God and to the family of the church.
